Preparing Future APRNs for Healthy Aging Through Partnership
As future APRNs, you have made a meaningful decision to advance your skills and knowledge within the nursing profession. In my role as the APRN Educational & Faculty Outreach Program Manager, I want to help support you throughout your academic journey and provide resources that can benefit you even after graduation.
As a former APRN student myself, I understand that the path to graduation can feel challenging at times. Seeking guidance from mentors and exploring valuable insights, such as the content shared in "Dr. Page’s Corner", can help you navigate your academic experience and prepare for your future as an APRN.
September is Healthy Aging Month, offering an opportunity to recognize that aging encompasses much more than a list of diagnoses. Healthy aging includes physical and emotional well-being, social connection, independence, and a sense of purpose. Providing care for older adults is most effective when it is approached as a partnership between the patient and healthcare professional.
When working with a patient, remember to ask, “What matters most to you?” rather than “What is the matter with you?". This simple shift in perspective can help ensure that care reflects each patient’s goals, values, culture, and lived experience.
How to Help the Aging Population as a Future APRN?
As you prepare for your future APRN role, remember that caring for older adults means looking at the whole person—not just a diagnosis. Consider these approaches when working with your patients:
Assess mobility, nutrition, sleep, cognition, mood, and social support.
Review medications for side effects, interactions, and unnecessary complexity.
Address fall risks and barriers to safe, independent living.
Involve patients in setting realistic and meaningful health goals.
Include family members and caregivers—with the patient’s permission.
Connect patients with helpful community resources.
Recognize patients’ strengths, not only their diagnoses or limitations.
I look forward to continuing our collaboration as you advance in your nursing careers. Please know that my team and I are here to support you every step of the way. Should you decide to pursue ANCC certification, I encourage you to explore the full range of certifications we offer. Remember, earning certification is more than a milestone—it represents a lifelong commitment to professional growth. Through ongoing renewal requirements, certification helps ANCC certified nurses continually enhance their knowledge, strengthen their skills, and stay current in practice. Below is our full list:
